On the morning of day six, Pirsig found it hard to get food down; their destination was Bozeman, Montana, where he once taught. They took Hwy 89 north out of Gardiner past Chicory to the junction with Interstate 90 / 191 and then west into Bozeman. The main street seemed vaguely familiar to Pirsig but he also had a feeling of being a tourist. Here they stopped and made calls to discover the route to Robert DeWeese's home. To get there, they took Cottonwood Road south for about 10 miles to Cottonwood Canyon Road where DeWeese lives. They spent days seven (Sunday, July 14) and eight (Monday, July 15) loafing and visiting with the DeWeeses. On day nine (Tuesday, July 16), they rode back into Bozeman together for the last time; it was time for John and Sylvia to turn back home. After they said goodbye, Robert and Chris decided to walk toward the school where he taught technical writing and freshman English. "There it is (Montana Hall) up ahead. Tension hits, the same stomach feeling, as we walk toward it." Robert and Chris spent day ten (Wednesday, July 17) camping in the mountains. Day eleven (Thursday, July 18) ends with Robert and Chris checked into the main downtown hotel in Bozeman. |
